Vellore is a city in the state of Tamil Nadu. The city is located on the banks of the river Palar. Vellore region is the largest exporter of finished leather goods in the country. The city of Vellore is also called ‘The Fort City‘.Vellore is primarily known for its two premier institutions, Christain Medical College and Vellore Institute of Technology. The city believes that Vellore was once a place surrounded by willow trees, hence the name Vellore. In the 18th century, Vellore became involved in the Carnatic Wars between Britain and France. It was located close to many decisive battles, including the battles of Ambur Arcot and Vandavasi.

Vellore Fort

Vellore is called the city of forts because of the fort located in Vellore. The fort of Vellore was built in the 15th century by Channa Bommi Nayak and Thimm Reddy Nayak. The fort was once the headquarters of the Aravidu dynasty of the Vijayanagara Empire. The fort’s ownership passed from Vijayanagara Kings to the Bijapur sultans, to the Marathas, to the Carnatic Nawabs, and finally to the British, who held the fort until India gained independence. In 1806, the first significant military coup against the British rule broke out over the fort.

Golden Temple

The Golden Temple is located at the foot of a small mountain of green hills at Lore. This temple was established on 24th August 2007. Maha Lakshmi’s Maha Kumbhabhishekam was performed in this temple. This temple is dedicated to Lakshmi Narayan. The Golden Temple sits inside a spiritual garden or ‘spiritual oasis’.Shashastra Deepam or one thousand eight lamps is a ceremony that is performed every morning and evening in the temple. Here a copper Pelto is carved on which 9 to 10 layers of gold foil are arranged.

St. Johns Church

St. John’s Church is considered to be the oldest church in the city of Vellore. This church follows the Anglican tradition. The church believes that soldiers who lost their lives during the Sepoy Rebellion War are buried in the church’s establishment. The church was raised in 1846 by the Madras government for the officers and men of the East India Company military station. In 1862, the Arcot military station was disbanded and the European regiment moved to Vellore.

Palamathi Hills

Palamathi Hills also known as Balamathi Hills. The Palms to the Hills is an area of the Eastern Ghats. Palam to Hill Range Otteri lake is known as Palamathi Hills due to its collective and nearby Palamathi Reserve Forest. The Palamathi Hills is an ideal place for nature lovers to visit. The famous temple is located on the top of this hill. With exquisite indigenous species of animals and birds, including lush greenery. 

Jalakandeswarar Temple

The Jalakandeswarar Temple is located inside the Vellore Fort. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is a magnificent representation of the magnificent Vijayanagara architecture. The temple complex has detailed sculptures dedicated to other Hindu deities like Lord Vishnu, Goddess Mahalakshmi, Goddess Parvati, Lord Brahma, and Goddess Saraswati. Lord Shiva Lingam in this temple is surrounded by water which is why this temple is known as Jalakandeshwar.
