The erection of the church was completed in 1604. It has been declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Basilica Bom Jesus Church is located in Old Goa. It is the oldest church in Goa. And this is a Roman Catholic church. It is a colony of Portuguese architecture and Baroque architecture.
The church is located approximately 10 km away from Panaji in Bainguinim village. Many people from all over the world come here to visit this place. Even after 400 years, the remains in good condition and are exhumed once a decade.
This church is not plastered from the outside and it is the only church like that in old goa. The floor of the church is made of marble mosaic and precious stones, and it adds to its glory. The interior is decorated with a screen from floor to ceiling and an image of St. Ignatius Loyola is placed to protect the infant Jesus. The image of the Trinity, considered the most sacred symbol of Christianity, is placed at the top.
Pictures of scenes from the life of St. Francis Xavier have also been put on display in the church. The burin, topped with a silver box with the body of St. Francis Xavier (1696).it was designed by the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Battista Foggini in the 17th-century. It took about 10 years to form. The casket in which his body is kept is made of silver and his sacred relics are displayed every 10 years on his death anniversary.
On the upper level is the Bom Jesus Basilica Art Gallery, which features the work of Goan surrealist painter Dom Martin. The Bom Jesus Basilica is open to the public every day and it is over 408 years old.
