Jowai is the headquarters of the West Jaintia Hills District in the Indian state of Meghalaya and is home to the Pnar, who is a sub-tribe of Hynniewtrep people. It is a picturesque place, located on a plateau surrounded by three banks by the Myntdu River on the southern border of Bangladesh. Due to the elevation of 1365 m level above sea level, the views feel warm and pleasant in summer with cold to chilly winters. Jowai is an important business and education hub for the entire district, catering to students from across the district as well as adjoining parts of Assam and Bangladesh. It is equipped with facilities like schools, colleges, hospitals, post-fees, etc. Like Khynriams, Pnars also has a matriarchal society where daughters inherit family property.
Tryshi Falls
The falls are compared to the Elephant Falls in Shillong. A bridge connects the green paddy fields around the falls. From the bridge, there is a beautiful view of Pynthor Nein. A track below the falls is also amazing.
Nartiang Monoliths
Monoliths exist in the length and breadth of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. However, the largest collection of monoliths is located here. Here are the remains of the ‘Summer Palace‘. The arch of the site is built using red bricks – and that’s a bare view.
Krang Suri Falls
Krang Suri is the most beautiful waterfall in the district. It is located in the Amlarem Civil Sub Division. Chisel and gravel sidewalks and views have been added to the complex to enable visitors to better appreciate the beauty of the falls and the surrounding area.
Umlawan Cave
Meghalaya boasts of the largest deepest caves of the subcontinent – the houses of Umlawan caves. These caves are connected with Kot Sati and Umskor caves. Numerous stalagmites and stalactites enhance the appearance of these caves. The caves are 100 meters deep and 21 km long.
Jarain Pitcher Plant Lake
Surrounded by lovely carnivorous pitcher plants, boat rides in this lake are a great experience. The plants spread over 50,000 square meters prove to be a unique sight for all. A pitcher-shaped fountain has been installed in the middle of the lake. This beautiful lake sits quietly between the gravel sidewalk, the arch bridge, the pitcher plant garden, and the greenhouse-interpretation center. This is a popular place for locals and tourists alike to see.
Syntu Ksair
‘Flower of Gold‘ means Syntu Ksair is located on the banks of the Minted River. This is the center of the freedom struggle led by Kiang Rambagh. A monument has also been erected here in his honor.
