Mormugao Fort is located in goa’s Mormugao, on the south side of the mouth of the Zuari River of Mormugao. Considered one of the main coastal forts of Goa, this ancient site is still well preserved and proudly settled in Goa. The fort was built a few kilometers away from Mormugao, to protect the harbor, so Mormugao was an important port for Portuguese ships.

The fort is one of the former famous tourist destinations of Goa and is very popular nowadays. And this is one of the reasons why it has been maintained. Its enormous bulwark and bastions are integral and make the field strong to this day.

Timing to visit 

No fixed time to visit here. But it would be better to go in the day Instead of going at night. Because of the uneven nature of the terrain in the darkness of night, it is difficult to explore.


The most important source of their income was the merchant ships, so the Portuguese always feared an attack on the coast. So it needed to be in full control of the Goa ports. Mormugao fort was built to protect the ports. 

According to ancient epigraphic inscriptions, His works began in 1624. so many attacks and disturbances took place in that century to speed up old Goa, therefore Viceroys think the alter the capital of Portuguese India to Mormugao. Because of this many buildings were built here. 

The area was lost during the Maratha invasion in 1737. In the nineteenth century, Nova Goa, now known as Panjim, became the new capital. However, the old fort is currently in ruins. 


If measured outside the existing walls of the fort Then it covers a circumference of 10 kilometers. There are some places where traces of Maratha occupation can be seen, where they have added new art or original fortifications. However, most of the fort’s architectural features are tied to the prevailing style of Portuguese architecture.



The fort was armed with 53 guns and cannons. Many of these features are still intact. The original fort also included three magazines, towering bulwarks, five prison blocks, a chapel, and accommodation for an armed force.

There are 2 unique fountains which are believed to have originated from a gold mine and sulfur mine. Its names are the Fonte de Malabar and the Fonte Santo Ignacio respectively
