Shivsagar is a city in Assam. The city is named after the lake there. The city is surrounded by the Dehing Rainforest. The architecture of Sibsagar Assam State offers various tourist attractions related to wonders, history, and culture. Dating back to the Ahom dynasty, this cultural town is full of historic tourist attractions from forts with underground architecture to numerous temples. Shivsagar city was earlier known as Rangpur city. The city was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom from 1699 to 1788. The province was occupied by the British in 1825 and was fully annexed in 1826.

Sivadol

Sivadol is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is situated on the banks of Sibsagar lake. This temple was built by Ahom king Swargadev Siba Sinha’s queen Bar Raja Ambika in 1734. This temple is considered to be the tallest Shiva temple in India. Vishnu Dol and Devidol are also located in the temple premises. Soh Sashastra Durga, with various weapons, is the “Pan-Himalayan” theme adopted in the plastic arts of Ahom temple architecture. Some of the unique sculptures installed on the outer walls of the temple are of Goddess Durga, carved with 2 arms, 4 arms, 6 arms, 10 arms, and 16 arms.

Talatal Ghar

Talatal Ghar is also known as Rangpur Palace. The Palace is one of the most impressive works of Tai Ahom architecture. It is the largest of all the Ahom monuments in the world. This palace is used by the Rajvi of Assam as a living palace. The palace is built in a typical Mughal architectural style. The palace is constructed entirely of organic materials – bricks and organic cement.

Rang Ghar

Rang Ghar served as a royal pavilion during the reign of the Ahom king. Here buffalo fights and other sports were played in Russian rocks. Rang Ghar is a two-story building. The Rang Ghar is also known as the Colosseum of the East. The Rang Ghar is considered one of the most ancient surviving amphitheaters in Asia. Owing to its rich historical importance, Rang Ghar was used as a logo for the 33rd National Games held in Assam in 2007.

Kareng Ghar

The Kareng Palace is built of wood and stone. Karenge is a magnificent example of Ahom architecture. The old palace was destroyed and the present one was built in 1752. The structure of the palace consists of seven floors – three of which are underground.
