Zanskar is a sub-district of Kargil district. Zanskar is known for its raw landscapes. The name Zanskar has many confirming sources from the Tibetan dialect which translates into Copper White, Copper Palace, or Copper Star. The history of Zanskar dates back to 200 BC. A clear picture of the Tibetan powers after the establishment of the Karsh and Fugtal monasteries in Zanskar by the 11th century. Zanskar is famous for buying Pashmina and Kashmir shawls, handicrafts, and jewelry. Buddhism regained its influence over Zanskar in the 8th century when Tibet also became a religion. Between the 10th and 11th centuries, the monasteries of Karsha and Fugtal became two royal houses. The city is one of the rarest regions in the Himalayas where traditional Tibetan culture, society, and buildings have survived the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

The Zanskar valley is located in the Kargil district east of Ladakh. It is separated from Ladakh by the Zaskar range which is a part of the Tethys Himalayas. The semi-desert territory is flanked by snow-capped mountains and sparkling clean rivers along with distinct flora and fauna. It is cut off from the rest of the world for over 9 months of the year because of heavy snowfall in the region. Zanskar valley is very popular among tourists for trekking and river rafting.

Chadar Trek

The Chadar track is also called the Frozen River. This track is the most unique and challenging track in India. On the Chadar Trek, there is a snow-capped mountain on one side and a river flowing on the other side. The thick blanket of ice that makes up the Zanskar River resembles a white blanket called “chadar” in the local language.

Phuktal Monastery

Phuktal  Monastery is located in the south-eastern part of Zanskar. This is a Buddhist monastery. It is one of the most isolated monasteries in the region. The monastery was built about 2500 years ago. The special thing about Phuktal Monastery is that the water flowing from the cave remains the same despite the degree of outward motion.

Darcha Padum Trek

The Darcha-Padam part is located on the river. Darcha Smita is a small Lahaul region of Himachal district. The city is one of the two primary capital cities of the Zanskar community. There are plenty of camping sites in the way of this one.
