Murdeshwar is a village in the Uttara Kannada district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The city is famous for its second tallest idol of Lord Shiva. The city is located on the shores of the Arabian Sea. The name of this city originates from Ramayana.
According to Hindu mythology, the village is based on the legend of King Ravana of Lanka. Ravana attained self-gender immortality by worshiping Shiva. When Lord Vishnu came to know about this, he made a ploy and sent Ganeshji there and told him to put this self-linga on the ground and destroy it. After this destruction, some pieces of it have fallen on this place. The place is a favorite picnic spot for devotees from Kerala and Karnataka.

The Murudeshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The idol of Shiva in this temple is considered to be the largest in the world. The temple is located on Kanduka hill. The Arabian Sea lies on three sides of this temple. The main entrance of this temple is called Gopura. The main deity of the temple is Shri Marines Ling, who is believed to be a part of the original Atma Linga. A 20 story gopura is built in this temple. The present complex of this temple was built by businessman and philanthropist done by R. N. Shetty.
