Shillong
Shillong is the capital of the state of Meghalaya. The city is a hill station. The name of this city means the abode of clouds. The hills surrounding the city remind the British of Scotland. This is why it is also known as “Scotland of the East“.The city is surrounded by pine trees. Descendants of Khirim, Myalim, Maharam, Mallaisohmat, Bhoval, and Langrim castes are found here. Shillong is considered to be home to numerous waterfalls. In addition to its natural beauty, Shillong also serves as the gateway to Meghalaya. Shillong is also famous as the music capital of India.
Until Meghalaya was a state, Shillong was the capital of composite Assam. Shillong was the capital of the United Assam until Meghalaya became an autonomous state. In January 1972, Meghalaya was made a complete state.

Umiam Lake
Umiam Lake is a man-made reservoir. The lake was created after dams were built to generate hydroelectric power. Umiam Lake is locally known as Sait Dam. The lake was created by closing the Umiyam River in the early 1960s. There is a beautiful view of the sunrise on this lake. The dam is a great day trip for the locals. The dam was constructed by the Assam State Electricity Board. Umiam Stage I was the first reservoir-storage hydroelectric project launched in the northeastern region of India.

Mawjymbuin Cave
Mawjymbuin Cave is located in the village of Mavjimbuin. It is a religiously important place. The cave is located in the wettest place on earth. The cave is made of calorie sandstone and has numerous stalagmites. The cave contains a Shivling shaped rock originating from the earth. Which is considered very sacred according to Hindu mythology. The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians is one of the most beautiful churches in Shillong. The church has two levels with huge arches and large stained glass windows. The first church of Christian Mary Help Shillong was built. The church was built in 1980.
