Trichy is also known as Tiruchirappalli. It is the fourth largest city. Trichy is one of the oldest populated cities in India. The city is ruled by Pallavas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara Empire, Nayak Dynasty, Karnataka State, and British people. According to Hindu mythology, the city is named after the three-headed demon Trishira. This demon meditated on the Hindu god Shiva near the present city to get the grace of God.
Uraiyur has been the capital of the early Cholas for 600 years before the third century BC. The city is currently the neighboring village of Trichy. The earliest settlements in the city date back to the second millennium BC. The medieval history of Tiruchirappalli begins in the 6th century AD. Ranganathaswamy Temple
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Ranganath, the form of worship of Lord Vishnu. The floor is constructed in Dravidian style architecture. The magnificent architecture of the temple includes 21 or so ‘gopurams‘ with ornate entrances, which is also the tallest ‘gopuram’ in India. The inner apartment of SriRanganatha temple was built in 817 CE by a lady name Hambi, of the class of dancers in the year 894 CE. According to Hindu mythology, this temple is one of the most famous Vaishnava temples in South India.
Tiruchirappalli Rockfort
Tiruchirappalli Rockfort is known as Malaikottai by the locals. It is a historic fortification and temple complex built on an ancient rock. There are many temples in this fort. Uchi Pillaiar Temple Rockfort, Thayumanaswamy Temple, Rockfort, and Ganesh Temple which are very famous among the locals. The fort complex has witnessed fierce battles between the Madurai Nayaks and the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur, the Karnataka region, and the Maratha Shahi forces. The oldest structure in the fort is a cave temple built by Pallavas in 580.
Kallanai Dam
Kallanai Dam is built around the Kaveri river. This is the oldest dam in Trichy. The dam was built about 2000 years ago. It is the oldest functional water regulatory structure in the country. It is one of the major tourist destinations in Tamil Nadu due to its stunning architecture. The dam was originally built by King Karikalan of the Chola Dynasty in c. 100 BC – c. 100 AD.
Vekkali Amman Temple
Vekkali Amman Temple is a temple dedicated to Vekakal Devi which is considered to be a form of Kali Devi. The main feature of this temple is the absence of a roof over the convent. The temple chariot is made of gold and was started in 2010. The people of Woraiyur see Vekkali Amman as their guardian deity.
Viralimalai Murgum Temple
Viralimalai Murugan Temple is located in the center of Viralimalai city near Trichy. The temple is located on Viralimalai hill. The name of this temple is derived from its hill. The Viralimalai Murugan Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan. To reach this temple one has to climb 207 stairs. On the temple premises, on its pillars are statues of Kashyap and Narad Muni along with several sculptures of Arumugam and Arunagirinathar.
