The city of Hassan is known as the capital of Karnataka temple-architecture. The city is named after a goddess named Hasanamba. An example of Hassan’s ancient glory is the Shettihalli Church, which was built in the 18th century. The city is mainly known for its Jain temples and Hasamba temples. The city of Hassan dates back to the Hoysala Empire in the 11th century. The city is located between two major cities of Karnataka, Bangalore, and Mangalore.

Nageshvara-Chennakeshava Temple

Nageshvara-Chennakeshava Temple

The Nageshvara-Chennakeshava temple was built in the early 12th century by Hoysala architecture. The construction of the temple in this temple complex is wonderfully done as if there are two twin temples. It is famous for its intricately designed architecture and scriptures. The Nageshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in the south direction. The Chennakeshava temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is located on the north side.

Hasanamba temple

Hasanamba temple is dedicated to Goddess Amba. This temple was built in the 12th century. The temple is open to devotees only two days of Diwali throughout the year. There is a belief in this temple that rice is offered by the devotees when the temple is closed and this rice never rots during the year.

Koravangala Temple

Koravangala temple is also known as Bucesvara temple. The Koravangala temple was established in the 12th century in Hoysala architecture. The temple was built in 1173 by a wealthy official named Busi to celebrate the coronation of King Veera Ballala II of Hoysala.

Shettihalli Rosary Church

Shettihalli Church is located near Hassan in the Shettihalli district. Shettihalli Church was built by French missionaries in the 1860s. Shettihalli Church is an ancient catholic church. One of the peculiarities of this church is that it is submerged in water every monsoon. So this church is the center of attraction for tourists. The church was abandoned in 1960 after the construction of the Hemavati Dam and reservoirs.

The Kedareshwara temple is a construction of the Hosla era. The Kedareshwara temple was built by Hoysala King Veera Ballala II and his queen Keladevi. This temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The idol of Lord Shiva in this temple is in the form of Krishnashila Shivalinga. The undercroft of the temple features sculptural friezes that depict The Ramayana, The Mahabharata, and The Bhagavad Gita.
